BOOK REVIEW: THE SECRETS OF THE HIDDEN WORKFORCE BY LISA TOTH

RATING: πŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“šπŸ“š

This was an inspiring read. This is Lisa’s story of how Rise Staffing Agency came about. What I love most is that the agency caters to those who are developmentally challenged or disabled in some way. She talks about the challenges they may face in the workplace, or how hard it is for them to find work.

What I enjoyed most about this book is how she included some of the people she met along the way, and how her past experiences helped her in her journey to help those with disabilities. She worked at institutions that specialized in assisting those in need of special care. She was an ally and advocate for them then. The stories she shared, most of them, pissed me off in one way or another. It’s like we get a sneak peek behind the scenes of really go on in these “hospitals” or “institutions”. One lady punched a patient in the stomach as a way of asserting dominance, like what? Another had a kid lying in his own vomit for days. I would love to meet some of these whacked “caregivers” and give them a taste of their own medicine. It’s not all unpleasant, and she shares that not every staff member is evil, but the bad seeds just stick with you.

You learn a few things about how schools or caregivers assist those with extra needs. Like when someone needs help using the restroom or help wiping, some schools use a “wand”. A wand is a stick with a wad of toilet paper at the end that is used to wipe basically. I don’t know why that disturbed me, but it did. I don’t see how you can properly wipe or clean someone that way. It just doesn’t seem sanitary.

She also teaches us about chaining, which is a method of teaching. Backwards chaining is when you do every step, but the last step, and you have the student do that step. Forward chaining is when the student does the first step themselves, and then you do every other step with them. Total chaining is you going over A to Z with the student, step by step. I think I described it right, and the author gives excellent examples in this book. It’s little things that you read, and you realize the author truly cares. Like creating developmental job programs, so that each client gets paired with the right job. She is setting them up for success, and I think that’s dope. I worked at a job that participated in a program like this.

In Atlanta, Ga, there is this store called Deal$ – like a part of Dollar Tree. They had this program, where they would allow developmentally challenged or disabled people to come in and work a few weeks out of the month. I liked it, I met some cool people. Sometimes it would be the same group, and sometimes they would switch it up. I just remember I always thought it was dope that we hired them to work a few times a month. Not many places do that, and I know they loved the experience. Random, I know, but you I got to throw in a relatable experience.

This gave me an insight into who Lisa Toth was as a person. She is someone who is kind, respectful, thoughtful, stands up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, and she is somebody that I would love to know. She also has a radio show The Hidden Workforce on Tulsa FM 105.7, HD2 95.5, or groovy1057.com. Pick this book ASAP, and I promise you will fall in love too.

Rise Staffing, formerly Phoenix Residential Services, Inc. was founded by Lisa Toth, July 2004. We have held contracts with Oklahoma DHS and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority to provide Home and Community Based Waiver Services for the past 16 years.

In July 2016, we obtained a contract with Oklahoma Division of Rehabilitation Services, allowing us to broaden our customer base and provide employment training, placement and support to people served through OKDRS.

Rise Staffing only chooses to hire employees who are hardworking and enjoy working well alongside their co-workers. We create a culture in our company that has transformed our team in several positive ways increasing our belief that it is worth putting in the time to encourage, train and communicate with employees and customers. Communications a two-way street, input from all is crucial for us to succeed with our service placements.

We know that failure to respond to employee concerns, makes for unhappy productive employees. We are interested in people enjoying their jobs and contributing to our customer’s success. The management of Rise Staffing does not believe that pay checks should be enough encouragement for employees to do well.

We know it is important for employees to make friends in their workplace as this can have a positive effect on their work life, reinforcing positive communication and experiences.

This is also likely to strengthen the bond between the team, in a practical way as well as social.

Our management team is hands on, meaning we are working in the field with our employees and customers, staffing the situations and learning from each other how to produce successful results.

Working together is imperative as each person receiving services from us is unique and their situation is not like the last one.

In other words, we will not expect you to fit in the box, but we need your input for out of the box thinking!
