THE SHADE UNDER THE MANGO TREE BY EVY JOURNEY

BOOK REVIEW: 📚📚📚📚

This book, more so the beginning, reminded me so much of my childhood with my grandmother. We have this Pecan tree in the yard, huge, that we would always sit around.  She had a vegetable garden in the back and a flower garden in the front. This book to me back to my safe place.

Luna was raised by her grandmother and a few years later she had to move back in with her parents and siblings. Her grandmother gives her a journal and tells Luna to write down everything, it’ll be like talking to a best friend. For the seven years she writes in her journal and pours her heart out until she leaves her journal behind at a little café.

Lucien is a young man who finds Luna’s journal. He reads the journal and becomes intrigued by the person behind the words. All of her life experiences had him questioning everything in his life. We see the struggles he has with his past, his fears, and the man he has become.

We witness the two of them trying to navigate through life and find their place in the world. Two people who are trying to figure out who they are and how to let the other in. I loved this book so much. It’s one of those books that remind you home and puts a little warmth in your heart.

Evy Journey writes. Blogs (three sites). Cross-genre novels. She’s also a wannabe artist, and a flâneuse (an ambler).

Evy studied psychology (M.A., University of Hawaii; Ph.D. University of Illinois) initially to help her understand herself and Dostoevsky. Now, she spins tales about nuanced multicultural characters negotiating separate realities. She believes in love and its many faces.

Just as she has crossed genres in writing fiction, she has also crossed cultures, having lived and traveled in various cities in different countries. Find her thoughts on travel, art, and food at Artsy Rambler. She also talks about books she loves.

She has one ungranted wish: To live in Paris where art is everywhere and people have honed aimless roaming to an art form. She visits and stays a few months when she can.
